Our Story
We built our home on acreage covered in pine tree forest. Pines age, as we all do. After 20 years of living among the pines, they had to be removed in 2018. The assault on the land gave us two choices: set new pines between the trunks of the old or hire earth movers to remove all roots and debris. We chose to clear the land and underwent a nearly three year process of putting the earth back together.
New roadways were put in, culverts, rock walls and 10 acres of pastureland. Wheat was sown to cover our tender pasture grasses, provide shade and hold in moisture. Farming neighbors lended expertise, advice and equipment loans.
Now five years later, a small barn houses sheep and chickens while our old chicken house keeps more rare birds safe and dry. An acre of land was set aside for a new orchard that provided fresh apples for the first time in 2023. A new blueberry patch was added to expand our varieties. And three acres of the ten in pasture has been fenced, with more to come. Our old garden spaces are beginning to show signs of neglect with all of the new projects, but this autumn will be put to bed with renewed vigor.
2024 plans include local farmer's markets and direct sales of our honey, eggs, lamb, herbs, blueberries and more.
